Verulam Gynaecology Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service

Welcome to the webpage of the Verulam Gynaecology Clinical Assessment & Treatment Service (CATS).

The Gynaecology CATS has been commissioned by West Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust and STAHCOM Ltd (St. Albans & Harpenden GP Practices’ Locality Management Group) to look after the gynaecological needs of all patients registered with St. Albans and Harpenden GP Practices.

A team of local General Practitioners with a Special Interest in Gynaecology (GPSIs) is working with a team of Consultant Gynaecologists to provide this service. The aims are to ensure that you will be seen by the right person in the right place first time for the management of your gynaecological problem, and to provide an excellent community based gynaecology service.

What happens after referral by my GP?

Your referral will be looked at by the Gynaecology CATS Triage team very quickly and there are four possible outcomes:

• Further advice is given to your GP with ideas of different treatments
• An assessment in the CATS clinic with a GPSI in Gynaecology
• An assessment in the CATS clinic with a Consultant Gynaecologist
• Onward referral to an acute hospital clinic if appropriate (via the Choose & Book system)

We will contact you to advise you of the next step. If this is an appointment in the CATS service, we will send you an appointment by letter.

Appointments at the Gynaecology CATS Clinic

We will try to make your appointment in a clinic where the Consultant has a special interest in your particular condition. Therefore it is important that you try to keep the appointment date that is given to you. If you cannot keep your appointment, please contact the booking service on 01727 823111 Tuesday – Friday afternoons between 1 and 5pm.

Please arrive 5 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to complete a short medical history form. On arrival, please report to the Reception and you will be seen as soon as possible.

We aim to see our patients at their appointment time. However, the nature of the one-stop service (including ultrasound scanning and clinical procedures), means that consultations can overrun. We request you to please make provision for being at the clinic for up to TWO HOURS, and we appreciate your patience and understanding if you are kept waiting.

We have a high-specification ultrasound machine on-site, and some patients may need to be scanned during their consultation. The GPSIs work closely with the Consultants and you may have both present at some point during your consultation and/or examination.
